I’m installing it on a new blog today and will let you know how it goes.  Also, I have just upgraded this site (themarketingmother.com) using WordPress Automatic Upgrade plugin, and everything went smoothly and blog looks fine!

Recently I posted about the FTC starting a similar clean-up campaign which many people decided to ignore but I don’t think we’ll be able to ignore Google’s decision now.

Although it’s early days as yet, a number of marketers using Adwords found that their quality score went through the roof overnight so they were paying enormous cpc.  They seemed to think that it was happening to any landing page that had an affiliate link on it.  Landing pages that had cloaked affiliate links, or re-directs were not affected  (yet) but most experienced marketers feel that soon those landing pages will also come under Google’s hammer.

You can see Google’s point – so many affiliate landing pages all ending up at the same product makes it boring for web visitors – and so many bogus, ‘honest opinion’ review sites misleading visitors as to which product really does offer the best value.  This is a valuable blog article here on the subject of scam sites.

Experts like Perry Marshall, Alex Goad and Glen Livingston have given their input about Google’s latest actions so click on those links if you want to know the whole scoop.

Although it looks as though Google are starting the clean-up with Adwords users, it’s highly likely that their seo algorithms will also change in the coming months so it’s wise to start adjusting your blogs and websites now.

If you’ve been on the web for any length of time you’ll be aware of the rubbish ‘reviews’ written by many affiliates trying to make money by promoting products.   Even if you have been writing honest reviews you will still need to make a few tweaks to your pages to make sure you stay within the FTC’s guidlines.

In a nutshell, the FTC say that all reviews that contain your affiliate link to a product must state this clearly and visibly so that the reader knows you will be paid a fee if they buy the product through your link.

This doesn’t have to be all negative though and to really understand how to go about implementing the new laws successfully I strongly recommend that you go now and read Mark Ling’s excellent blog post where he explains everything clearly and also suggests how to go modify your reviews so that you have no loss in your profits…

The best way I’ve found to cloak affiliate links is as follows, it’s quite simple to do and it works well… and if it’s good enough for Mark Dulisse and Willie Crawford then it’s good enough for me!

Making a Simple Redirect Link

.

Using Notepad or other text editor that you use, open a file and save it as “index.html”,  ”index.htm” – or whatever file type you’re using.

Then insert the following code in the HTML
section of your page.

<head>
<meta http-equiv=”Refresh”
content=”0;url=http://youraffiliatelink.com“>
</head>

<body>

</body>
</html>

Just copy this code, making sure to replace the words highlighted above in red, ”youraffiliatelink”, with your own real affiliate link.

Save the file, placing it in a directory (a folder) that you have created in the root folder of your site and which you named after the product name.  When you want to refer someone to this great product, you just refer them to your new url – as in:

http://www.yourdomain.com/productname/

NOTE: It’s not advisable to use a javascript encryption method to do cloaking – in fact I’ve understood that it’s a big no-n0 because encoded javascript is the sort of thing scammers and hackers use so has the potential to be harmful which is why Google wave a red flag as of course they know this.

If you use WordPress, there is a good plugin for cloaking affiliate links, called ’Link Cloaking Plugin for Worpress’ (surprisingly!) which you can download for free.  Make sure you read the ‘readme’ file as you have to carry out a couple of additional small steps after you’ve activated it.

enter your long affiliate link, click on the  ’shorten’ button and Hey-presto! there you have your new link

Another Security Tip:  Do You Install Scripts On Your Website – Like WordPress For Example?

Did you know that when you install scripts on your website, there is an ‘install.php’ file, usually found in the ‘admin’ folder of a script.  If you leave this ‘install.php’ file permanently there you are making it easier for hackers to get in!  So when you’ve successfully completed the install and you’re sure all is working fine with the script, remember to go and delete that file.

It nearly happened to me last year but was just able to save all my important files before my computer finally gave up. But that near-miss gave me a nasty shock and I now do backups pretty regularly.  You can back-up using services online but I prefer to use my own backup hard drives.  I use 2, for safety.

The best would be to use a combination of online back-up services together with your own hard drives - there is some risk in using online backup services which I’ll go over in another post.  But if you wanted to go for the online option now you can google ‘online backup services’ or ‘online backup reviews’ and many services come up.

I used to manually copy from my computer to my hard-drives but some months ago I found an excellent backup software and since then have used that.  It transfers files a lot faster and once you’ve told the software what to back up, it starts each time with just one click and it’s away.

I saw that PC World Magazine made this comment about SyncBack and I can second it with a full heart:
