There is an enormous upgrade to WordPress, that has just come out: WordPress 3.0, aka ‘Thelonious’!

Matt says this about the new version: “Major new features in this release include a sexy new default theme called Twenty Ten. Theme developers have new APIs that allow them to easily implement custom backgrounds, headers, shortlinks, menus (no more file editing), post types, and taxonomies. (Twenty Ten theme shows all of that off.) Developers and network admins will appreciate the long-awaited merge of MU and WordPress, creating the new multi-site functionality which makes it possible to run one blog or ten million from the same installation. As a user, you will love the new lighter interface, the contextual help on every screen, the 1,217 bug fixes and feature enhancements, bulk updates so you can upgrade 15 plugins at once with a single click, and blah blah blah just watch the video.”

Here’s a video that runs through the new features:

I’m installing it on a new blog today and will let you know how it goes. Also, I have just upgraded this site (themarketingmother.com) using WordPress Automatic Upgrade plugin, and everything went smoothly and blog looks fine!

This is only going to be a very short post, but I wanted to pass on a link to you of a video I’ve just watched…

It’s a 38 minute video ‘starring’ Tony Robbins, Frank Kern and John Reese and it’s well worth the watching!

They talk about why some people just can’t seem to get going on their ‘success road’ in life and Tony gives a great way to solve this problem. It’s a simple solution that has far-reaching results if we actually DO it.

All 3 of the guys say how they applied the solution earlier on in their lives, and what they achieved because of it. Here’s the link:

http://tonyrobbinstraining.com/320/interview-with-frank-kern-and-john-reese/#comment-5846

Actually, I’m going to give you another link which is somehow related to the video – it’s to an article by John Reese that I read about 10 days ago and made something really ‘click’ for me, big-time – it’s also very amusing

It’s called: ”How *Crap* Can Dramatically Boost Your Profits!” and you can find it here:

http://www.im4newbies.com/traffic-secrets/john-reese-articles/article7.htm

The result for me after reading that article was to (finally) get going on my first product ….and no, the content won’t be *crap*! – but maybe the presentation and graphics might be – to my mind, as long as the info is good in a product it doesn’t matter so much about what it looks like, I just won’t sell as many as if I had great graphics but I won’t be embarrased to put my name to it.

Btw, while I’ve been writing this post, I’ve just seen a new video by Frank and it could be very interesting for a lot of marketers, as long as you’re willing to part with $1. I don’t know what it will be like but he’s getting my $1 as soon as I finish writing here. If you want to give him yours, here’s the link:

http://masscontrolsite.com/blog/?p=56

Speak to you soon …and onwards and upwards!!

Update: I HIGHLY recommend Frank’s offer – I signed in and as usual he’s giving great content – and a big supply of it

Recently I posted about the FTC starting a similar clean-up campaign which many people decided to ignore but I don’t think we’ll be able to ignore Google’s decision now.

Although it’s early days as yet, a number of marketers using Adwords found that their quality score went through the roof overnight so they were paying enormous cpc. They seemed to think that it was happening to any landing page that had an affiliate link on it. Landing pages that had cloaked affiliate links, or re-directs were not affected (yet) but most experienced marketers feel that soon those landing pages will also come under Google’s hammer.

You can see Google’s point – so many affiliate landing pages all ending up at the same product makes it boring for web visitors – and so many bogus, ‘honest opinion’ review sites misleading visitors as to which product really does offer the best value. This is a valuable blog article here on the subject of scam sites.

Experts like Perry Marshall, Alex Goad and Glen Livingston have given their input about Google’s latest actions so click on those links if you want to know the whole scoop.

Although it looks as though Google are starting the clean-up with Adwords users, it’s highly likely that their seo algorithms will also change in the coming months so it’s wise to start adjusting your blogs and websites now.

The FTC are starting to implement new laws restricting how bloggers promote affiliate products and most of us will need to modify how we present our promotions – or we’ll find ourselves in trouble.

If you’ve been on the web for any length of time you’ll be aware of the rubbish ‘reviews’ written by many affiliates trying to make money by promoting products. Even if you have been writing honest reviews you will still need to make a few tweaks to your pages to make sure you stay within the FTC’s guidlines.

In a nutshell, the FTC say that all reviews that contain your affiliate link to a product must state this clearly and visibly so that the reader knows you will be paid a fee if they buy the product through your link.

This doesn’t have to be all negative though and to really understand how to go about implementing the new laws successfully I strongly recommend that you go now and read Mark Ling’s excellent blog post where he explains everything clearly and also suggests how to go modify your reviews so that you have no loss in your profits…

Here’s the link to FTC plans to regulate bloggers, but what does it mean for me?!

If you want to know some nitty-gritty on how to use video to increase your traffic, conversions and sales then you can do no better than go and download a FREE 39 page report that’s being offered by one of Frank Kern’s favorite buddies, Jeff Schwerdt (otherwise known as ‘Herschey’).

Although he’s promoting his product at the end of this report, the first half is full of really detailed great information on how to make and use your videos to get real results. There’s no optin sign-up or anything

You can download it for free here.

I’m sure you’re already well aware that videos are still one of the greatest ways to successful marketing and this FREE report shows you exactly how to start making your own videos immediately.

Herschey’s report is really excellent content, superior to a lot of stuff that’s being charged high dollars for …download it here.

This is a small exert from the report:

“If you go to our blog you’ll see some recent posts on a video launch we ran in March 2009 for a Forex product. The past two launches of this product have brought in six figures each and every time the product was released.

Over a 30-day period we released several videos, and since I was the director, editor, and post production manager you get the uncut insider’s look at how we scripted and executed a product release using videos”.

Herschey then gives you links to videos showing their campaign and they were very enlightening!

The best way I’ve found to cloak affiliate links is as follows, it’s quite simple to do and it works well… and if it’s good enough for Mark Dulisse and Willie Crawford then it’s good enough for me!

Making a Simple Redirect Link

.

Using Notepad or other text editor that you use, open a file and save it as “index.html”, ”index.htm” – or whatever file type you’re using.

Then insert the following code in the HTML
section of your page.

<html>
<head>
<meta http-equiv=”Refresh”
content=”0;url=http://youraffiliatelink.com“>
</head>

<body>

</body>
</html>

Just copy this code, making sure to replace the words highlighted above in red, ”youraffiliatelink”, with your own real affiliate link.

Save the file, placing it in a directory (a folder) that you have created in the root folder of your site and which you named after the product name. When you want to refer someone to this great product, you just refer them to your new url – as in:

http://www.yourdomain.com/productname/

If you have any questions please ask away in the comment box below…

NOTE: It’s not advisable to use a javascript encryption method to do cloaking – in fact I’ve understood that it’s a big no-n0 because encoded javascript is the sort of thing scammers and hackers use so has the potential to be harmful which is why Google wave a red flag as of course they know this.

Free WordPress Affiliate Link Cloaker Plugin

.

If you use WordPress, there is a good plugin for cloaking affiliate links, called ’Link Cloaking Plugin for Worpress’ (surprisingly!) which you can download for free. Make sure you read the ‘readme’ file as you have to carry out a couple of additional small steps after you’ve activated it.

Quick & Simple Cloaking

If you just want to do a really quick and simple cloak then go to:

http://www.budurl.com

enter your long affiliate link, click on the ’shorten’ button and Hey-presto! there you have your new link

Hope you find these methods useful – any questions or comments please add them in the comments box below…

I’ve been using Hostgator hosting for 3 years now and I would not swap them for anything. For starters, I’ve never – and I mean never – knowingly had downtime with any of my sites.

They give great value for money, have excellent support and are very helpful, pleasant and professional. At the most recent count they are hosting over 1,300,000 domains, which is QUITE an achievement…

Apart from the quality of the hosting they offer, one of the useful facilities they have is LIVE CHAT 24/7 …I love it so if you need to know something quickly, you can. Or you can phone in, which I believe is also 24/7. If you’re emailing in a support question, their support staff are excellent and usually answer within several hours.

Hostgator uses the updated Cpanel and they have a good selection of video tutorials on how to set up your hosting account. Cpanel includes Fantastico – which means you have a long list of webscripts available to you, most of them for free, like:

LiveChat, a PhpBB Forum, Support Ticket System, Content Management systems (like Joomla for example), 2 click automatic installation of WordPress blogs, Shopping Carts, Faq scripts, Image Galleries, unlimited email addresses, Polls & Surveys, Site Builders with templates …you can even build your own Wiki.

They also have a forum, both for pre-sales and for members. I’ve never used the forum because I’ve never needed to and I prefer using LiveChat or Support emailing.

I’ve been trying to think of any negatives that Hostgator have but I just can’t think of any – and that’s the truth …they’re even patient when you’re really new to the web and need to ask idiotic questions. Well, they haven’t managed to be host to 1.3 million domains for nothing, have they?!

If you’re just starting out you can opt for the ’Hatchling’ package at $4.95/month which allows you to host only one domain and has genuinely unlimited disk space and bandwidth.

If you plan on developing your web business you’ll probably want to go for the ‘Baby’ package which allows you unlimited domains – with of course the genuinely unlimited disk space and bandwidth. This costs $7.95/month.

If you click on the banner image below, you’ll also see there is a coupon code there which you can use to get a 20% discount.

When you have a ‘very strong’ password for your website it’s a big help in keeping hackers out. The trouble with strong passwords is that they are very difficult to remember, being a jumble of higher case and lower case letters, numbers and symbols.

So I’ve just posted a simple but effective tip on how to make a very strong password …and be able to remember it easily. Click here on password strength to read the tip…

Another Security Tip: Do You Install Scripts On Your Website – Like WordPress For Example?

Did you know that when you install scripts on your website, there is an ‘install.php’ file, usually found in the ‘admin’ folder of a script. If you leave this ‘install.php’ file permanently there you are making it easier for hackers to get in! So when you’ve successfully completed the install and you’re sure all is working fine with the script, remember to go and delete that file.

Before it happens you think it won’t – but the chances are it probably WILL HAPPEN at some point and you’ll really kick yourself if you haven’t taken precautions. So… is your valuable computer data backed up – will you be ok if your computer died on you today?

It nearly happened to me last year but was just able to save all my important files before my computer finally gave up. But that near-miss gave me a nasty shock and I now do backups pretty regularly. You can back-up using services online but I prefer to use my own backup hard drives. I use 2, for safety.

The best would be to use a combination of online back-up services together with your own hard drives - there is some risk in using online backup services which I’ll go over in another post. But if you wanted to go for the online option now you can google ‘online backup services’ or ‘online backup reviews’ and many services come up.

I used to manually copy from my computer to my hard-drives but some months ago I found an excellent backup software and since then have used that. It transfers files a lot faster and once you’ve told the software what to back up, it starts each time with just one click and it’s away.

I saw that PC World Magazine made this comment about SyncBack and I can second it with a full heart:

“There are many backup programs out there, but few as elegant and powerful as SyncBack from 2BrightSparks”. PC World Magazine.

You can try it free for 30 days. It’s very easy to set up and they have an excellent Help section and Customer Support.
