Thanks Lee! You are so right - I've just this minute finished watching the video 'starring' Anthony Robbins, John Reese and Frank Kern and I'm going to make a blog post about it because it's going to help a lot of aspiring internet marketers - it was very, very helpful :)

Nice Intro Miranda, we all struggle with many things as we find new ways of building an on line presence, the survivors are those that succeed, while others give up !

Hello Margaret,

Yes, it certainly would conflict with your main index page IF you uploaded it to the main root folder - but you don't ...if you look again at the instructions above, you can note that we make a new folder in the root domain (in the example below I've called the new folder: your-affiliate-folder), calling it whatever you want, and the new index page that you make goes in there.

So the finished, full url of that folder and page you are making looks like this (I am leaving the : and . out just for the purposes of showing it here - of course, you'll put it in as normal):

http //www your-root-domain.com/your-affiliate-folder/index.html

As index pages open by default, then you won't need to add the 'index.html' in the url, so it can just be:

http //www your-root-domain.com/your-affiliate-folder/

2. re: the Apache part, I am not very technical but I'm pretty sure it doesn't - I am also with Hostgator and have no problem with this method.

Just try it and see - it really is quite simple - and you will see whether it ends up on the right page when you test-click your link after setting it up.

Let me know if you still find you have any problem.

Good Luck!

I'm having real trouble setting up link cloaking on my hostgator website (to be). I have 2 questions about your method:

1) If the notepad link cloak is saved as index.html or index.htm won't that conflict with the home page index.html?

2) Does this method of cloaking require the server to have Apache with mod_rewrite module enabled?

Many thanks for your comment.

Hello Tammy,

I hate regulations too. However, I think this regulation is a good one and necessary for the future of affiliate marketing. If Google hadn't clamped down on spammy websites cluttering up the search engines, in the end people would have stopped using search engines - and so it is with affiliate review sites which is one of the major ways of promoting products online. Most of the so-called review sites are not really honest reviews ...the 'my top pic' is nearly always the one with the biggest affiliate payout!

If it isn't regulated in some way, a year or so down the line all review sites will be totally ignored by web visitors. I don't know how effective this regulation will be but at least it's a step in the right direction:)

By the way, for anyone interested in collectibles, your site is great

Hi! It was great skyping with you today.
I personally think this regulation is a load of BS. I hate regulation generally - i just think that it starts with the best of intentions but snowballs quite quickly. Generally though i think that the market takes care of it - if people demand disclosure, affiliates will start to disclose...
However, what is the point? it doesn't change the price that product creators will sell it for, so who cares? Would love to hear your thoughts!

Zack emailed me the other day to say that the problem had been simply that his computer had run out of memory!

I have included this here as it may help someone else with the same problem in the future

Zack, go back again and have another go, try different dates - do it when you are in relaxed mood because you may be 'missing something' if you're feeling tense ;)
If you still can't make it work, come back here and give the EXACT steps you're making and say each result you get.
Also, try and find a friend who knows computers well (it is so much easier for someone to help when the computers in front of them)
